Privacy Policy

We collect what we need to run a chat service, and nothing more. We don't sell your data, show ads or track you across other sites.
1. What we collect
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Email, username, display name and password (stored only as a salted scrypt hash) | To create your account, log you in, send login codes and reset your password. |
| Profile details you choose to add: avatar, banner, color, bio, custom status | To show your profile to other people. |
| Messages, reactions, pins, uploaded files and voice messages | To deliver them to the people in the conversation and show them later. |
| Friends, blocks, server memberships, roles and read positions | To power friends, privacy controls, permissions and unread markers. |
| Device sessions: browser type, IP address, sign-in time and last activity | So you can see and log out devices, and so we can spot abuse. |
| Reports and moderation actions | To keep communities safe and keep an audit trail. |
| Settings such as theme, notifications and privacy filters | To remember how you like LinkUp set up. |
We don't use advertising trackers or third-party analytics.
2. How we use it
- To provide, secure and improve LinkUp.
- To send account emails, such as login codes and password resets. We don't send marketing email.
- To enforce our Terms and Community Guidelines, for example with rate limits, AutoMod and handling reports.
- To meet legal obligations.
3. Who can see it
- Other people. Your profile is visible to people who share a server or DM with you. Messages are visible to everyone who can access that channel or conversation.
- Moderators. Server moderators can see reports filed in their server and the server's audit log.
- Service providers. These include the email provider that delivers login codes and the hosting provider. They process data only on our instructions.
- Legal requests. We disclose data when we're legally required to, or when it's necessary to protect someone from serious harm.
We don't sell or rent your personal information.
4. Voice and video
Voice, camera and screen sharing connect your browser directly to the other people in the channel over encrypted WebRTC. Our servers relay only the signals that set up the connection. We don't record or store voice or video calls. We may use a public STUN server, such as Google's, to help browsers find each other. That server sees your IP address but not the call itself.
5. Cookies and local storage
We don't use tracking cookies. Your browser stores your sign-in token and a few display preferences, such as your theme, in local storage. Clearing your browser data signs you out.
6. How long we keep it
We keep your data while your account is active. When you delete messages, we remove them right away. When you delete your account, we remove your email, password, profile, friends, notifications and sessions. Your past messages in servers and DMs remain, credited to "Deleted User", so conversations still make sense to everyone else. Uploaded files and backups may last for a short time after deletion.
7. Your choices and rights
- Edit your profile and email, change your password, and log out devices in Settings.
- Control who can DM you, who can send you friend requests, and what content gets filtered in Settings → Privacy & safety.
- Delete your account in Settings → My account.
- Depending on where you live, for example in the EU, the UK or California, you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete your data, or to object to some processing. Contact us and we'll help.
8. Security
Passwords are hashed and salted. Every login needs an emailed one-time code. Sessions can be revoked at any time. Uploads are served with strict security headers. No system is perfectly secure, so if you think your account has been compromised, change your password and log out all other devices.
9. Children
LinkUp isn't for children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has an account, we'll delete it.
10. Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll let you know in the app before the change takes effect.
11. Contact
For privacy questions or requests, contact us at the email address listed by the operator of this site.
